Whether it's straightforward or well known is surely less interesting than whether it's correct. :-) As stated, the principle above is oversimplified. At backgammon save you typically should run, but "backgammon save" is not the same as "a backgammon loses the match." In general, you need to weigh the loss of a backgammon against the gain in gammon-saving chances (or even winning chances) that you get by staying.
