A few final thoughts from me:
I would not classify all checkers on 4, 5 and 6 as a mess (although it means that previous play was probably bad, because you are not running of the gammon despite the 55). The board can still be built and you can still contain hit checkers.
You also need to consider how the number plays. In Timothy's position, the 55 is a bit awkward if you stay, because you cannot slot points or keep good outfield control - that is also something to weight in the stay or run decision. For example, with a 63 it would be hugely correct to stay - that roll can be used productively to slot the 3 and better control the outfield.
