Rolling on "wrong" side -- a pointless rule

As long as both dice have come to rest unambiguously flat, why should anyone give hoot in hell which side of the board they landed on? In our usual (admittedly booze-addled, often) chouettes in the '70s, we played any flat die as it lay -- on the right or left side of the board, on the bar, on the checkers, on the table and, yes, on the floor. OK, maybe the floor is a stretch (although we never had a problem), but I can't think of a good reason why a flat die in full view on or near the board shouldn't always count -- particularly in tournament play when clocks are in use. To characterize the dice-on-right-side-of-the-board-only rule as "petty" would be to give it more credit than it deserves -- petty implies some validity -- this rule has none that I can see.
