3-away X-away cube actions

When the magazine(/journal) Inside Backgammon started in the early 90's (edited by Robertie and Goulding) there was a regular column by Robertie titled "Intermediates Corner" whose (noble) intent was to school intermediates on what they were doing wrong. For other reasons (e.g. it could be and probably was considered condescending) it didn't last long. At that time I wondered "do intermediates really play alike?".
It's one thing to know an opponent's tendencies (as in a chouette, or even in a local club). But I agree with Keene that generalizations can get you into trouble. Christian's post can be summarized (IMO) as "be careful when playing with fire." Also good advice.
Another issue (which is consistent with Keene's and Christian's posts, but not quite stated yet) is "what will you be thinking when the cube comes back?" I know one thing I could be thinking: "well, this is probably a take against a good player, but do I really want to put so much equity on the line against a weak opponent...?"
