2 pip or 1/2 pip crossover penalty
Posted By: Chuck Bower In Response To: 2 pip or 1/2 pip crossover penalty (Stanley E. Richards)

Background: Stanley e-mailed me a couple posts from a GoL (now GammonU) thread which included the position below. The thread (and problem below) were initiated by "QuizFactorette" (aka "Racgammon" aka Raccoon aka Daniel Murphy). Although I did post in that thread, Stanley apparently didn't save my post. (And as it says on the broken record "unfortunately GoL/GU posts are not archived, except possibly in a private collection".) This document confirms the date of 2006.
As far as penalties for outside crossovers, I guess I've revereted to Ward's 0.5 pips each, although I previously didn't (and still don't) think that is a magic number. (Further, I don't think there is a magic number.) Thorp and Ward have a sweetspot which falls in the moderate to long bearoffs without severe wastage. I'm pretty sure those are the situations Thorp used and Ward is a tweak of Thorp.
