I confess I don't understand...

If you mean you don't understand what is going through the mind of the coach, you probably have a lot of company (including the coach!). "Hey, it didn't work last time; must be wrong."

As you mention, Blackledge went haywire disagreeing with the first one (ND went for it; Blackledge said "punt"), and one of his reasons was "ND is on the road." Later, when MSU had the ball with about or less than a minute, he argued that they should play conservatively because if they go into OT, "they are at home".

As we see all the time, announcers and coaches have no clue about how to analyze a situation, but they don't hesitate to support their flawed argument with contradictory 'logic'.
