That means "Indy Racing League" to me. :)
IMO, the WPT telecasts (with Mike Sexton) were head-and-shoulders above anything I've ever seen on ESPN for giving insight into what players were (or should have been) thinking.
Many parallels with 70's backgammon. Why was it popular? Playboy, Sports Illustrated, etc. (i.e. media) had a lot to do with that. And when they presented BG, it was the excitement/volatility/emotion of the game as much as (or more than) the intellectual side of the game. Basically those articles came out in 1973 or so and by 1980 the decline had set in. Similarly to major global economic swings, not all "indicators" were/are in sync.
Again, I emphasize that if poker popularity is in decline, I take no pleasure in that. On the contrary, I think it's a bad thing for mind games in general and for backgammon in particular.
