Great ! I thought I had the correct answer but had missed that simple piece of reasoning altogether. Maybe it would be required to notice that when playing 13 games, the order in which they are played is irrelevant.

Which means that I have probably overspecified the problem. Saying that the derivative of the error rate is a strictly decreasing function of time seems to be enough (so that E(t+h)+E(t-h)/2 > E(t)), and very likely to be true (the more one thinks, the less the added value of an extra second).

Which also means by comparison - and you obviously already knew that - that in a normal backgammon match, "more than one minute" is the correct answer, because of the possible overshooting in the last games.
