Historical note: Vermeil was Prothro's assistant. Can you imagine him seething "just wait until I'M a head coach...!" :)

Krasker's table (your last link) says that going for 2 when trailing by 8 (right before the PAT) is even a BETTER ploy than when trailing by 9. I anticipate another entirely new (and contentious) thread!

Lastly, I point out that Krasker's software is built similar to backgammon bearoff database generators -- you start with the very end of the game (e.g. 1 checker vs. 1 checker) and work backwards. (If you cruise around his website he tells you all about how it works.)
