The gammon value is elevated and needs to be considered in the timing of the double. In general, you want to double early in positions with good gammon potential.
There are other considerations. The take point for the redouble is very high for the reason you mentioned. So, you are giving your opponent a lot of cube leverage. Secondly, along the same lines, your opponent can eliminate the value of your gammons with a recube. There are some positions where your opponent can redouble in the face of gammon danger since it doesn't matter if he loses a gammon or not when the cube is on four. This further increases the value of holding the two cube.
I think this leads to the main point. Most players don't know this. I would argue that at least half of the players in the Championship Division are unaware of the gammon values and recube take points at this score. If your opponent is going to recube similar to money, your initial doubling point comes even sooner than the bot recommendation.
