What is Happening to Backgammon?

Don't know what you mean by the qualifiers "really formal". In the first half (or so) of the 90's, face-to-face play had the KG ratings which were (from my experience) given a lot of credence. All(?) of the online backgammon servers have had ratings, going back to the early 90's with FIBS.

The flipside of players becoming inactive to hold their high ratings is when players give up the game because the ratings tell them they are really bad....

OTOH, do we actually want to hide the 'truth'?
