What is Happening to Backgammon?

Regarding bridge, unless things have changed recently, money can be made in the following ways:
1) playing with a 'client': a person who wants to acquire masterpoints (for master rankings) pays a top player to be his partner (in pairs events) and/or teammate (in multiplayer team events). Top players have been known to make a living this way.
2) teaching and writing: with a rather large customer base AND with bridge being a game where learning from books is a common practice, there is considerably more $ here than at BG. (You can toss in businesses that succeed by selling bridge books and other bridge paraphernalia.)
You probably were more interested in whether playing directly for money (prizes or even out-and-out wagering) is common. I'm pretty sure not, and for the simple reason that illegal communication between partners would be too easy. Yes, at private clubs (e.g. country clubs) there are bridge games for money, but common with backgammon, those games are between trusted competitors.
BTW, an entertaining book which covers some money-bridge antics is The Bridge Bum by Alan Sontag. Don't know if this book would be as enjoyable to someone who doesn't know how to play the game, though.
