No, I don't. What I suspect is this: The expert wanted that cube shipped so he could pass and evade the near certain match-losing gammon that had developed. Yes, the novice had tried to double during the previous roll after the cocked die, but it was far from clear, given his play up to that point, that he was composed enough to remember to double at the next legal opportunity. The expert's remark: "Now it's OK to double", was meant to encourage the clearly distracted novice to remember to send that cube. The expert wasn't giving the novice a free lesson on the rules at a critical moment in a live match -- he was leading him down the garden path. I don't know the players and I wasn't there, but I that's the way I see it based on Bill Riles's description of the incident.
