And let me add "thank you" for everything you have done with GNUGB. It is greatly appreciated. You clearly do practice what you preach.
To me, there is a very important fine point here. If you want to encourage authors to give their work away for free, that's fine. If you want to coerce them to do so or to change the laws to require them to do so, I have a problem with that. I see that as an impediment to progress, rather than enhancing it.
Perhaps just as important, removing copyright protection restricts liberty. If Paul Weaver wants to write a book and sell it to me under the conditions that I do not reproduce it and if I accept those terms, the government should not interfere with this private agreement between Paul and myself. If the laws prohibit Paul from imposing those terms on me, he may not write the book and I won't have the opportunity to make the purchase. It is my business if I accept the copyright restrictions and it is Paul's business. It is noone else's business, including the government.
