The backgammon boom of the 1970's was coincident with promotional books and articles that portrayed and emphasized backgammon as a money game. (See magazine articles from the time, such as those in the March 1973 issue of Playboy.)
This might be sociological. That was also the decade where pot smoking was effectively decriminalized (i.e. was not prosecuted and therefore permitted) in much of the U.S.
I better stop there before I get accused of posting banned political material. :)
