A little rules question...and socialiability in a local BG club

As is often the case, I think asking WHY a rules exists could help ameliorate the issue.
The "player always rolls on his/her RH side" greatly simplifies the situation, avoiding questions like "when does the permission end?", and problems that happen when players disagree on whether or not a roll counts because of uncertainties about such permissions. KISS was applied after many years (i.e. back in the 70's you could roll LH with permission).
I suspect the reasons for keeping equipment choice and direction uniform for the entire match is also an attempt to avoid arguments/disagreements. In addition (in the case of equipment change) it avoids slowing down the match. Unlike basketball (for example, where the direction is swapped at halftime) there is no clear cut halfway point in a match. Also, tennis switches sides, but that game has the wind to deal with, not just a (perceived) smaller surface area to roll the dice.
As far as dice change, that rule apparently has been maintained to cater to the superstitious. Do we want to chase away the fish who think they can change their (bad) luck? :)
As Jason has emphasized, it's not WHAT the rule is that usually leads to bad feelings, but HOW is it brought up, discussed, and enforced. Could that be the real source of the problems you relate here?
