Rules are a lot easier to enforce...

I'll explain my thinking; please be sporting and explain yours as well. :)
As usual, we're probably grappling with definitions of 'sporting'. It's late (after midnight). It's probably not a five minute drive home. Assuming winner-take-all:
Equity for player B if they split = 0.5*prize.
Equity for player B if they play = p(B wins)*prize.
Let's say player B is a 70::30 favorite. Then he costs himself 0.2*prize. What's that, $10? $20?
My definition of 'sporting'/'sportsmanship' says player B (better player?) sacrifices his (net) equity to allow player A to get more sleep.
Player B is under no obligation, of course. Both players signed up for the tournament, paying their entry fees, knowing that it could come down to this. And I wouldn't begin to call player B's requirement that the match be played "unethical". Also, I do feel that the amount of $ up for grabs is a consideration. (BTW, there is no clearcut breakpoint here.)
Three times at ABT events (once with ABT points on the line) I've declined my opponents' requests to split and not play the matches. The larger two of these were against opponents with plane flights. The ABT point match was finals of the Consolation in Pittsburgh (don't remember the prize pool). That was not winner-take-all. The other two were jackpots with first prizes of $720 (winner take all) and something like $1800 & $900 for first and second. So maybe I'm a bad sport, too.
