Does anyone else play 'decubes'?

In a regular game of mine, where I take the box against several players, I introduced the decube some years ago. If I think it may not be a double, yet one or more players may pass, I cube anyway and offer to put the cube back where it was, if players take. All the players are always given this option by me.
I doubt I'm the only person who doesn't understand what you are doing. Your opponents (specifically, the crew with you in the box) are allowed to require you to put the cube back where it was (centered or on your side of the board)? Why would anyone ever pass a cube if they are allowed to do this instead?
