Boring Variant

It looks clear to play 4/2* 7/6 in the variant, because 7/6 brings a second builder. The second builder is a huge factor, adding attacking and covering chances, while giving a non-duplicated number for that purpose.
So I agree that the variant is a big change to the original position, where there are two builder-attackers in place after either hitting play.
Of course, the general theory of positions like this should take into account both attacking and restraining chances. Those are affected by flexibility and building power up front. Maybe Stick's point in showing the variant is something like that. If you try to apply lessons learned from this position (perhaps taking certain specific statements made in this thread too literally or too generally), and you ignore or improperly weigh the placement of forward builders, you may blindly and incorrectly make a play like 4/2*/1 in some related position.
Practically speaking: It's nice to come up with meaningful generalizations, but that's hard to do over the board.
