Curious question: What is the difference between backgammon players?

It depends on what you're looking for in a book. If you're looking for scientifically backed prescriptions, then Gladwell's books certainly won't give you that. Gladwell is a writer and not a scientist. There have been a couple of times when I found Gladwell's reasoning so unscientific that I could barely force myself to finish reading his article. But if you're looking for intriguing ideas and fodder for thought, then Gladwell's books are excellent.

Regarding the subject at hand (getting really good at backgammon), it's not clear to me that the science is advanced enough to provide much more beyond what common sense and expert opinion would tell you. So I don't think it matters too much if Gladwell is not very scientific in his discussion.
