This is the position my mind’s eye saw when I played 9,4 the in the first one! Here, there will be a builder on the 8pt after making the 4pt and 9pt. Is that enough to beat making the 5pt? I’m not sure. One thing that Stick referenced is that Blue is not trying to build a block against White. Blue certainly needs both the 4pt and the 5pt, but probably does not need the 9pt. After he makes the 9pt, clearing it without leaving a direct shot may be a problem. After making the 4pt and 9pt, Blue can safely play a single 2, 4 and 5. After making the 5pt, Blue can safely play a single 1, 2, 3 and 5. It’s much closer than in the original position, but I’ll guess making the 5pt in this variation is correct. Mike
