I think your recollection is a bit inaccurate, for most of Grandells career the fields were quite soft compared to today from what I have read, Levermann etc came a little after (at the end of the jerry era). From what I gather the story goes, Grandell bought jellyfish, learned very fast and played a 3 PR or whatever at a time most others played 6+, and there were more big events around than today.
