When i began seriously playing backgammon, my first hero was Wilcox Snellings. I first saw in his play the willingness to hit on the guff, incorporating then making the guff, transforming the blot from a liability into an asset. But this affords also firmness and audacity. With timidity, you will hurt yourself in this approach, as Clausewitz would have said.

Here, making the guff, creates a three point board, against the railroad with two blots. The split has the position already connected. Blue also has a look on the entire board. The undeveloped stack on the midpoint is the only weakness. Why not playing 13/7, adding a man to the zone? If white hits, there is no other improvement and we are likely to make an advanced anchor. But if we are not hit, we're in the driver seat.

6/1 13/7.
