Daily Quiz 31 march 2012
Number 1
I see 4 plausible moves here: a) 24/13 (risk 14/36, not creating builders) … b) 16/5 (no risk, creating 2 builders for the 4-point)… c) 13/8 16/10 (risk 8/36, slotting the 10-point and creating builders for the 4,7 and 9-point) … d) 16/11 24/18 (risk 27/36, creating 2 builders for the 7-point).
a) and d) seem to risky with just a little reward. The strategic goal in this position is to escape the back checkers, the builder play (c) gives blue two goals instead of one, he has to make points, and he has to escape, this might be a bit too much, also the 16/5 play doesn’t give blue awkward moves.
Answer: 16/5
Number 2
Blue can play 8/5 6/5 (risk 5/36, but effectively about 3/36) or 13/10 11/10 (no-risk). After a white entry both variations are not yet a double for blue (although rather close ats). The difference is there after a white fan, after that blue can in both variations cash the game. So the reward is 16/36 after the point-making variation, and 9/36 after the safe variation. So the reward is 7/36, against a risk of 3/36.
Answer: 8/5 6/5
Number 3
Making the bar-point is important if it can cause white to break. The following sequence is rather probable: Blue slots the bar-point with 13/7 17/15, white enters one checker…. Blue covers the bar-point, white enters the second checker and brings one checker into his board…. Now blue has enough pips to play (he can eventually dump on the 2-point if he wants to) and the white position will become overplayed.
Answer: 13/7 17/15
