Daily Quiz 6 april 2012
Number 1
One thing I noticed lately in pick and pass situations is that the pick & pass numbers are stronger when the hit and cover numbers are diverse. In this position that is the case, when blue leaves the bar-point white has 6 and 1 to hit and 2 and 3 to cover, this gives 8/36 numbers that hit and are constructive. White is also the favourite in a blitz-situation since he still has an anchor, and blue hasn’t. All in all I’d play safe here.
Answer: 13/7 11/7
Number 2
This clearly isn’t a backgame yet, since blue has only a half-prime. Right now white has a total of 5 points, and blue only 4, so simply put we might say that white has more structure right now, and that is very important in a proto-backgame. Of course the golden structure clearly should be valued strong here, but I don’t think that’s enough to make this a double, especially since the usual 8-point is missing here.
Answer: No Double
Number 3
This is a tough choice, both 20x16/13 and 13/9 24/21 have strong arguments.
Good reasons to hit:
It wins race + It escapes + It puts a second checker behind a 4-prime + the attacking numbers (1,2,3) are mostly duplicated with the entry numbers
Good reasons to make the 5-prime:
It makes escaping difficult + It keeps the anchor + the most valuable attacking/safety number on the front (2) is duplicated with the number needed to try an escape + whites front position could easily crunch
I switched a few times from the one to the other, but finally I choose for making the 5-prime, but I think both plays will be rather close.
Answer: 13/9 24/21
