Prize structure

Strangely, I was discussing this type of format with someone from Greek backgammon federation today. I was told that they already thought the system, but they decided against it. The argument from their side was that if player A, that paid 10$ to enter, plays player B, that paid 40$ to enter, in the semifinals then the 2 players might want to settle the outcome of the match. For example player B could guarantee the first prize of 10$ to player A if player A played bad enough to loose. The large prize that player B would win after entering the finals would allow him to buy cheaply the win from his opponent who could win less in the finals anyway. For the same reason I was told that the side bet cannot be higher than the entry fee.

Did anyone encounter similar problems so far?
