Ok. It comes from Lamford's book "Starting out in Backgammon" and he applies it to bearing in against an anchor with the midpoint yet to clear. I think it's good advice when restricted to those sorts of positions - i.e. when your opponent has a good chance of breaking contact, you need a decent racing lead to double.

Agree that I was using it in on overly-broad manner, and that it doesn't apply here. I still think it's a take - a 40 pip lead is surprisingly resilient - and the lack of market losers makes me say play on.
