In Response To: 10th Carolina Invitational: Option Base Pool and Equity Pool explanation needed (leobueno)

In the example on the website, the Total column is wrong. That will be fixed shortly. Here's how the pools work:

In the Championship, the Base Pool is the required entry fee, and the Equity Pool is optional. In the Advanced and Novice, both pools are optional.

All prize pools pay out 100%. Each player pays a registration fee regardless of which pools they are in, and that is the only "rake" I'm taking in the ABT main event.

Unlike traditional side pools, payouts are not limited to top finishers. Both pools pay out based on the ABT point formula for More Swiss. If you are in the pool, and you win ABT point, you cash in the pool.

Assume 12 players in the Advanced get to a 6-3 record. All 12 will win ABT points. If 10 of them are in the Base Pool, those 10 will cash. Two players played for free, and will win points, but not money. The payouts will simply skip those players. So, if a non-Base player wins the whole thing, the player finishing 2nd for ABT points would get the first place payout in the Base Pool.

Continuing the above example, if 8 of the 12 are in the Equity Pool, the Equity Pool will pay those 8 players, skipping the 4 that did not get in the pool.

The ABT formula uses "Golf rules" for ties, meaning the payouts are combined and split evening among the tied players. So, if 3 players get knocked out in round 10, those three would split payouts 8, 9, and 10 in the Base Pool (assuming all three were in the pool). If 2 of the 3 are also in the Equity Pool, they would split payouts 7 & 8 (the bottom two payouts for that pool).

I'm happy to answer any more questions about this or any other aspect of the tourney. We're excited to be trying this new approach!
