"Backgammon" in other languages

The slight differences no more make portos or shesh besh a variant of backgammon than money play is a variant of backgammon.
Match play and money play have slightly different rules but are both still backgammon - they have the same starting positions, checkers more the same, etc. cube actions are different.
Portos and shesh besh (Israel) play the same as match play and money play, except cube action (ie it doesn't exist), as you can play matches without the cube, as we have novices do at our NYC meetup. When I played a 3-pointer Tuesday night against a newbie and we didn't use the cube, we were playing backgammon, not a variant. It was the same as portos with the slight no bg modification.
Turkish shesh besh would be a different matter however since a 6-5 is a special roll.
It's a very fine distinction, however.
