I like playing down from the midpoint with H (Hit) = 13/11 8/7*. When you add in the on-roll advantage, Blue will be trailing in the race after this turn, so priming options make sense. Having spent the spare on the 8pt in order to make the 5pt, it also makes sense to mobilize the spares on the midpoint.

Move one of White’s checkers on the 17pt back to the 16pt, and I would consider spliting with X (Hit and split) = 24/22 8/7*. The split would then duplicate 6, and threaten White’s outfield checker.
