There are many cases where it is incorrect to use the numbers on both dice to bear off a single checker; also positions in which you should bear off one checker instead of two with a non-double; or less than the maximum possible number of checkers with doubles. Ray Kershaw has given many examples of these in the "Effective pip count" chapter of his book, "Backgammon Funfair".
