A backgame is a backgame whether it's early or not. If your opponent was David Todd you wouldn't hesitate to call this a backgame. An early backgame, a premature backgame, a backgame likely to rapidly shift... Perhaps any of those. But it, technically, is a backgame at the moment.

That being said, I meant "right", as in, "correct, with just a 36 pip deficit, your opponent will not be able to maintain this nascent backgame; however, with a 58 pip deficit they might be hard-pressed to not fall into a backgame if they don't hit on the 5 (your hope)"
