Local Backgammon debate 1,3 vs 2,4 backgame

Howdy all,

During a get together yesterday one match had a well timed 1,3 backgame (assume it was a money session). There was a discussion about differing backgames and which were better. There was agreement on 1,3 being stronger compared to 1,2 however there was a discussion about a 2,4 backgame.

I'm curious whether people think a better position is a well timed 2,4 backgame or a well timed 1,3 backgame.
