In both scenarios, you have told me where 4 checkers are. Where are the other 26? That makes a huge difference.

There are some nice apples-to-apples comparisons in Trice, but you have to be careful to not blindly apply them to general positions. Here are the win and gammon % for the "defender" in Trice's examples:

Game Win% Gammon%
1-2 55.6 33.5
1-3 59.3 34.5
1-4 75.6 26.2
1-5 75.6 26.2
2-3 61.9 38.5
2-4 60.4 35.0
2-5 61.4 23.7
3-5 65.9 24.1
3-4 64.7 33.3
4-5 73.0 24.1

According to this, 1-3 is a smidge better for the backgamer than 2-4, but only if you reach the artificial positions in Trice's examples. I wouldn't make broad generalizations.
