In Response To: Local Backgammon debate 1,3 vs 2,4 backgame (Michael Petch)

it's a question of timing. the 12 game suffers the most from bad timing. a the advanced (+/- a gap) can survive w/ less than perfect timing. - there are frequently rolls that the opp cannot play vs a 12 (and to a lesser extent a 13 game) which hurts the backgemer's timing . backgames in general suffer from gammon likelihood and the further back the anchors are the longer the backgamer will wait - and that leads to gammons and backgammons. So, in answer to the question, the answer depends on where the other (opp and your own) checkers are on the board.
