I would strongly suspect that it's better to have two checkers closed out than to have 3 anchored checkers on the ace point, though I haven't looked at this position specifically.

Of course that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't chase after the 3rd checker because 3 checkers closed out is better than 2 checkers closed out.
