one of my big blunders this weekend

The fact that MCG burnt some time on this shows that he knew what to consider. My guess is he spent the time calculating the TP and the GP. Then going over all numbers and checking how his replies would play. Then estimating how many G losses, and finally making a decision. Perhaps he had to redo some of the counting to make sure he had it right from the start. Perhaps he realized it was a key moment so it was OK to spend some time on the decision.
Some players will spend a lot of time staring at the board, hoping that they somehow realize what to do. MCG is not one of those players. If MCG spends 10 minutes, then it is because he is gathering information and processing that information in order to come to a conclusion. This is possible for some position types, and this happens to be one of those positions.
Just because someone spends time on a decision doesn't necessarily mean that they are unsure about what to do. Perhaps they are just going through their mental toolbox which happens to big for the problem at hand.
I am not sure if I would have cubed, and if cubed my instinct reaction is that it looks like there are many wins in it for me. On a good day I would go through the above which is what I think MCG may have done. On a bad day or if tired, then I would just have scooped this cube without spending too much time on it.
