After reading the fine and detailed analysis, I'm getting more biased towards 4/3*. I think the argument about the cube value clearly favors the bold hitting play, where opponents either are not good enough to double or overshoot their market by a lot.

About the three questions, I clearly favor covering with a four if they dance. The second blot can be picked up later in many variations, but leaving a double shot in our home board should not be done more often than absolutely necessary.
