I first heard about TMP from Chuck Bower too, but it seems this term has been around for at least 35 years. Paul Magriel mentioned it in this NYT column in 1979, though in that example six was too many.

"Holding too many points at one time can create a position that looks strong but is untenable because it lacks flexibility."

(I like Ian's "seven is not heaven.")
