The context of your question makes me think Magriel's play was bar/20 3/2* - entering is forced of course, then knock white off balance and while she's regrouping own the outfield.

I'd play 8/7 and hope she doesn't shake a six which she won't 70% of the time.

As for gammon risk, it's certainly there and leaving three blots and the possibility of having six(!) checkers back seems to make for quite a few. OTOH, if white can only whack one checker it's probably a cash so maybe that's why gammon losses weren't discussed.

I haven't looked at it with a bot yet.
