To balance this there must be a sequence in which you're glad you didn't double. At first this doesn't seem possible, but couldn't there be a sequence that leaves you too good to double?

It's true you can't double if you become too good, but that doesn't mean you're happy you didn't double earlier. Your chances in the match would be at least as good (probably better) with the cube on 2.
