Thanks to Dr. Koca for pointing out that if fifteen people are in the draw, the sole unpaired player would have no chance of a bye. I can modify my proposal to correct this. Start off by putting all fifteen names in a hat and draw out one to see who gets the bye. If the unpaired player draws the bye, then put one pair in opposite semis of the same half of the draw that does not contain the unpaired player. The remaining paired players can be put in opposite halves of the draw. Now, everyone has the same change of getting a bye. Problem solved, and husband and wife will never meet until the semis and probably not until the finals.
