Doug Zare has a 2007 Gammon Village article, "Serious Backgammon Errors - Late Loose Hits," which concerns hitting loose with a five-point board. As he mentions, his thresholds don't agree with Lamford's rule, and he suggests that the difference might be that Lamford considered four-point boards. I haven't gone through the positions in the present thread, though, to see how well Zare's table of thresholds works.
