Forget the Quiz Factor

I looked at the split play, and decided that it didnt look enough like a 'backgammon position'. This is a maxim that I use for lots of play choices - what looks more natural? So, putting a spare on the 6 felt natural to me, without sacrificing fluidity, or opening the door to crushing doubles, plus as you said, it keeps white from running away from the 5pt.

Dont get me wrong - I can see why the split is nice, and I would be fine with my captain making that play. I can accept that my choice may be wrong here :)
