This is what Michael Depreli said, but I disagree that it doesn't "play something else." There are two situations in which XG 3-ply can be said to "play" something.

1. You're playing against XG on its default setting.

2. You're doing a rollout with its default settings.

In both cases, a normal search filter is used. You can of course change it in the second case, but most people don't unless they have some reason to. So, for the purposes of understanding what kinds of biases can occur in rollouts, 3-ply with normal search filter is what is most relevant.
