You misunderstand -- what I am saying is that my genuine impression until today was that "strict moves" was generally accepted as the ethical norm in tournament backgammon, so while feeling sympathy for my opponent, I might have enforced the accidental play, under the impression that this was as typical and accepted as touch-move in chess. In other words, that while "letting the other guy off" might be noble and generous, it would not be expected, and might even be regarded as naive and foolish.

Newcomers to a backgammon milieu do not necessarily bring along with them the same understanding of the traditions and values.
