Yes, X11 was the file I was thinking of that caused the problem.
It wasn't my intention to denigrate GNU -- as I pointed out in my post, I am completely ignorant about emulation and a lot of technical computer stuff. GNU Backgammon is the only time I have ever tried running a Windows program on a Mac. I'm grateful it worked well for me for the past 6 months.
I'm eager to use XG because I have heard its evaluations are somewhat more accurate, and also because it seems more feature-rich and easier to set up positions on. (For instance, evaluating a position, and then moving a checker around to variant positions to identify salient strengths and weaknesses of the position).
As to the icons, I can only report what the Apple Support tech told me on the phone, and confirm that since I removed my icon clutter, my iMac is indeed performing better. He stressed that this has only become an issue with the newer OS X systems (Mavericks and Yosemite?). I was due for a clutter clean-up anyhow.
