Neil's advice is always right, and his suggestion is great. Please let me know which ABT event you will go to and if you will be playing in the intermediate/advanced division so I can buy you in the Calcutta. You would be one of the best intermediates in the world and will have a great chance to win.
I am not saying you should pay Championship...that's up to you. You will get far better competition in the higher level, but unless you have experience playing in live tournaments over a board, it's best you start at a lower level as it will cost you less to learn and you have a much better chance of winning some money.
Before you go to a live tournament, I would recommend you:
a) learn how to count pips well without computer help-- cluster counting is best;
b) get a copy of the rules for the tournament you will be going to and read them. If you have any questions, contact the tournament director (or me).
c) Be very conscious of the schedule...don't be late, get plenty of sleep, and have fun!
d) Let the TD or people from the USBGF know this is your first event or you are just getting back into the game and they will help make sure you enjoy your experience.
