Blue to play 41

Oops. Tired after the long drive home last night, I think I should have waited until today to post.

"Destinations" refer not only to final checker destinations, but also to temporary destinations. I instituted this concept after looking at hundreds of early game positions, in order to make Nactation as efficient as possible. I have mentioned or explained temporary destinations in various bgonline posts (as has Mike), but last night I slipped a cog. [Thanks to Mike for his e-mail.]

In the 64P-41 position (repeated) above, Blue's 13/8 play (for ranking purposes within the D family) should be thought of as 13/9 9/8. The two destinations for this play are the 9pt and the 8pt. By contrast, the two destinations for the 13/9 8/7 play are the 9pt and the 7pt. Both plays have a 9pt destination -- that's a tie. What remains is to compare the 8pt spare with the 7pt blot. As the 8pt is further from the 6pt (than the 7pt is), 13/9 9/8 ranks higher.... In short...

.....D = 13/9 9/8
......d = 13/9 8/7

Whew -- relief; I won't need to tweak the definition of the wrinkle. For blot/spare definitions in the outer board, simply further from the 6pt ranks higher.

The relevant part of the 6pt convention is reviewed under diagram #51 (p. 56) of the Nactation tutorial. The "wrinkle" is explained under #52 (pp. 59–60). The 13/8 situation (as 41T or 41D) is illustrated under #25 (p. 23).

Nack

P.S. If you reread this post, please ignore the first half, and start reading from: "Aside from that..."

In describing 13/8 above, D is okay, though my preference is T (sTack/Tower). Another fine choice is "8" (8pt destination).

Sorry about the confusion. As a self-imposed penance, I am performing a 4-ply rollout of 64P-41 at –3–6, which I'll eventually post.
