Thanks for the extra information!

Honestly, before I saw the RO results, I had assumed that the gammon seeking play 8/4(2) 5/1(2) would come off noticeably better than at 7away-7away.

Part of the issue is that you're holding the cube, i.e., you're too good, but only slightly. Many of the gammons are imaginary since you'll be cashing when things don't go quite well enough. I suspect that if, in an unlimited game, you were to give White the cube, then the gap between the two plays would narrow, though it would still not be the top play.
